Family Activities this Festive Season at Blaauwklippen

‘Tis the season for festive markets, carols by candlelight, outdoor movie nights under starlit skies, sipping Gin cocktails on balmy evenings, traditional Christmas roasts, sparkling decorations and all the magic that a warm South African summer Christmas brings. 

To make sure you and your family have a merry memorable time in the winelands, here’s a round-up of activities offered at Blaauwklippen that you shouldn’t miss. 

Wine Tasting & Pairings – throughout the season

The Blaauwklippen Tasting Room offers an array of tasting options and delightful pairings. No bookings are necessary, and the Tasting Room is open 7 days a week from 10 am to 6 pm.

Galileo Open Air Cinema with Mamma Mia! – 14 December

The Galileo Open Air Cinema presents Mamma Mia! at Blaauwklippen Wine Estate, under the stars!

Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day. A fantastic musical with the music of ABBA, starring Pierce Brosnan, Colin Frith, Amanda Seyfried, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, and Stellan Skarsgård. 

Doors open at 5 pm and the movie starts at 8:15 pm. A variety of food, alcohol, hot & cold beverages, as well as backrests and blankets are available on location – cash only. No BYO food or beverages allowed.

Twilight Christmas Market – 18 to 22 December

The Twilight Christmas Market at Blaauwklippen has become a firm favourite during the festive season because of the unique and charming atmosphere – imagine a beautiful summer evening in the company of loved ones under a canopy of century old wild fig trees. Africa meets Europe where the old farm buildings and vineyards welcome mistletoe and fairy lights.

An assortment of entertainment will keep the little ones occupied, including a four-wheel motorbike train, sand art, face painting, jumping castles and other inflatables, while adults can do last-minute Christmas shopping and enjoy live music by local artists. 

Opening times will be daily from 4 pm to 9 pm, and on Sunday 22 December the Twilight market will operate from 10 am to 9 pm.

Carols by Candlelight – 21 December

This is your chance to sing along to your all-time favourite Christmas carols in a stunning setting in the heart of Stellenbosch. The magnificent gardens of Blaauwklippen provide the ideal location for a candlelit evening. Shop for a bite to eat and a bottle of Blaauwklippen wine during the Twilight Christmas Market before the carols start at 19h30. 

Entry is R20 per person. All proceeds go to children’s charity. 

Sunday Family Market – 8, 15, 22, 29 December

The Blaauwklippen Family Market has become renowned for being the best way to spend a Sunday in the Western Cape. Not only are there a wide range of mouth-watering foods and creative crafts, but there’s also fantastic entertainment and plenty of space for the kids to run free and play.

If you’re looking to appease your appetite there’s plenty to please, whether it be banting burgers, scrumptious samosas or any of the incredible international cuisine on offer; Greek kebabs, German Flammkuchen, Chinese dumplings and more! All this paired perfectly with Blaauwklippen wines, live music from the very best talented local musicians, to ensure a toe-tapping good time!

In addition to the wide array of arts & crafts, clothing and gadgets, the Family Market is joined monthly by an amazing antique fair, with bits and bobs from yesteryear. And while the adults shop, the kids can play; even fur kids are welcome! 

Enjoy a fun-filled day beneath the fig trees every Sunday from 10h00 to 15h00.

Pizzas, Live Music and Gin Fridays

End the week on a relaxed note at Hamm & Uys eatery, when the culinary team whips up delicious wood-fired pizzas while you enjoy any of Blaauwklippen’s craft Gin cocktails on the veranda. Think parmesan shavings, Caprese salad toppings, pulled lamb roast, home-cured pork belly bacon and wild watermelon carpaccio. 

Every Friday from 17h00 to 22h00, kitchen closes at 21h00. 

Christmas Roast Every Sunday at Hamm & Uys

Sunday lunch at Hamm & Uys is usually a big feast, and this festive season Johnny Hamman and Marius Uys will put a festive twist on the traditional Sunday roast. The bread course, consisting of traditional mosbolletjies, vetkoek and roosterkoek, West Coast snoek pâté, farm butter and homemade jams are served with a complimentary glass of celebratory bubbles. This is followed by West Coast mussels and the main grazing table of Christmas leg of lamb, roast sirloin, Traditional Christmas gammon with pineapple and cherries, ox tongue with sweet mustard, Yorkshire pudding and gravy, and cinnamon pumpkin fritters. A traditional South African Christmas dessert table will round off the perfect Sunday feast. Remember to try the traditional tiekie pudding and find the hidden coin. Every Sunday one coin will be baked into this traditional Christmas pudding. The lucky finder will receive a complimentary lunch at Hamm and Uys for two guests.
