VINEYARD UPDATE
Fruit set is another milestone in the growth cycle of the vine and follows almost immediately after pollination has taken place. The pollinated ovary of the plant starts to extend, enclosing the seeds and forming tiny green berries that are known as “ertjiekorrels” as they resemble baby peas. Fruit set has started in our east-facing Chardonnay block and is looking nice and even. Uneven fruit set can prohibit consistent ripeness as the berries in the bunch ripen at different rates.
The energy that provided vigorous growth during spring must now be focussed on ripening the grapes to ensure optimal production. This is best achieved through canopy management. The ideal balance between sunlight, shade and air circulation around each bunch is controlled through a number of measures such as leaf removal, shoot positioning and shoot thinning; requiring meticulous attention to detail and constant vigilance as nature takes its course.
