Flowers for friendship; herbs for remembrance.

This quote from an anonymous author comes to mind when reading about Carolyn Martin’s memorable wine, flower and herb masterclass recently presented at the magical Kasteel Engelenburg, Brummen in the Netherlands. Carolyn’s love of and expertise in the field of wine and food pairing is well known and this includes her special penchant for herbs and flowers in the pairing process.

I arrived in the Netherlands on Monday 18 June and had the pleasure of staying at Kasteel Engelenburg – what a fantastic setting! The beautiful grounds and waterways with giant waterlilies remind one of Monet paintings and the herb garden is simply awesome. That evening Robert Benier of Benier Global Wines and I were treated to a fabulous dinner paired with some beautiful wines.

The next morning saw me up bright and early, gathering fresh herbs and flowers in the delightful Kasteel Engelenburg garden for my wine, herb and flower masterclass at 11h30.  To raise the spirits, our guests were welcomed with a glass of Elation Méthode Cap Classique, an exquisitely crafted blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This was followed by the Creation Viognier to stimulate the senses whilst we sampled the variety of herbs and flowers under discussion.
