Franschhoek Vignerons excel at inaugural The Sommeliers Selection

With almost 400 entries received for this year’s inaugural The Sommeliers Selection competition Grande Provence and La Motte came out tops in their respective categories. Grande Provence was announced the Trophy winner for its Chardonnay 2013 in the Full / Rich White Wine category. La Motte, also a Trophy winner, outshone the rest in the Elegant /Classy White Wine category for its Chardonnay 2013.

Wineries ranging from large, small and niche took part in what has been described as ‘A New Wine Award With a Difference’, which also catered for beer, ciders and international wineries. The results were announced on 19 June at the recently launched Open Door Restaurant at Constantia Uitsig.

A total of 101 were selected for the Sommeliers Selection Wine List, which was judged only by members of the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA). The judging panel was chaired by internationally acclaimed sommeliers, Higgo Jacobs and David Clarke.

La Motte also secured a spot on the sought after wine list for its Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (Fresh / Crunchy White Wine) and Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (Voluptuous / Rich Red Wine).

The focus of the competition was to keep it fresh, new, and different, but still retaining the serious aspect of wine, whilst guaranteeing the highest standard.
