French Onion Tartlets paired with Cabernet Sauvignon

Winter is a time when many a great red wine is enjoyed by wine lovers, especially the King of red wines, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Roll of puff pastry
  • 4 Onions, finely sliced
  • 2 Tablespoons fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 Cup of fresh cream
  • 2 Eggs
  • Salt and Pepper
  • ½ Cup grated parmesan cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C.
  2. Start of by melting 50g butter in a frying pan and add a little oil to stop it from burning. Once you’ve got the pan nice and hot, tip in the onions, mix them thoroughly with the hot butter, and let them cook on high for about six to ten minutes until very lightly browned at the edges. Take them off the heat and add the thyme leaves and salt and pepper. Let the onions cool down.
  3. For the pastry, line 6 tart cases with the pastry or you can also line one big flan or quiche pan.
  4. For the filling, whisk the cream and the eggs together and season well.
  5. Fill your pastries with the onions and pour over the cream mixture, sprinkle with the parmesan cheese and bake them for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Serve it with a fresh garden salad or as a starter.
  7. Enjoy with Lanzerac Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lanzerac Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 from the Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch was awarded a Veritas Gold Medaland a Michelangelo Silver Medal. At R140 per bottle you can’t go wrong with this wine for the perfect winter treat.

lanzerac_cabThe 2013 vintage: The uneven years are normally the better ones in the Stellenbosch area, and this wine is testament to that. A good harvest season in 2013 delivered overall even ripening of grapes with a great balance between fruit, complexity and structure for this King of grapes.

Tasting Notes: A classic Cabernet showing plenty of drinkability right now with the tantalising promise of savoury, lip-smacking maturity to come. Black fruits abound with black cherries, currants and berries coming to the fore, all edged with hints of olive tapenade, dark chocolate and sundried tomato notes. Soft, supple tannins and refreshing acidity add to the concentrated fruit, the whole suggesting there is plenty more excitement on the way.

Cellaring Potential: Enjoy this wine now or mature for a further 5 – 8 years.
