Full-blown Summer Flavour at Nederburg

Take a journey to Nederburg this summer for a breathtaking blend of the traditional and the contemporary, just like its wines.  Set against the imposing Drakenstein Mountains near Paarl, the winery commands magnificent views and lets you imagine how it was in the beginning when founder, Philippus Wolvaart, arrived in 1791. His fine manor house, built in 1800, overlooks generous lawns and gardens, filled with birdsong and fragrant flowers and shrubs.

An ideal destination for families with children, Nederburg now also boasts a sturdy climbing frame (‘jungle gym’), situated on the front lawn of the historic manor house that houses The Red Table restaurant.

Sit back, relax and enjoy top-notch wine and food while indulging in pure country hospitality.

During the summer months, between 16:00 and 20:00 (from 22 December to 30 March 2018), this country-style eatery will be offering a scrumptious selection of Spanish-style tapas, offered on its own or with suggestions from the chef on which wines to enjoy with each delicious bite.

Ranging in price from R15 to R160, the carefully chosen tapas selection features items such as hake goujons with tartare sauce, Asian pulled pork sliders, green salad, mini venison burgers, Bocconcini stuffed chicken, lentil samoosas with peach chutney, grilled lamb skewers with couscous, fries and aioli, and a platter of cold meats, charcuterie and cheese. It also offers dessert delights – the Turkish delight and malva infused saffron ice cream, served in a cone, is a must-try.

Delicious children’s meals and milkshakes are also on offer, together with pre-booked picnic offerings at R185 per person.

In the spirit of celebrating a joyful summer, select wines from Nederburg’s award-winning Heritage Heroes collection to complement your meal. This exquisite range honours some of the visionaries who have shaped Nederburg and its history as one of South Africa’s most awarded wineries.

There’s The Anchorman, a wooded Chenin blanc that commemorates Nederburg’s founder, Philippus Wolvaart, who established the farm in 1791 and planted Chenin blanc, amongst other varietals.  The 2016 vintage of this wine was recently selected as one of the winning wines of the 2017 Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge, convened by South Africa’s Chenin Blanc Association.  Earlier this year, the same vintage was awarded platinum at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards for best South African Chenin blanc (priced at over ₤15).

The Brew Master, a Bordeaux-style red blend, honours Johann Graue, a pioneering winemaker who was amongst the earliest to recognise that vineyard quality dictates wine quality.  The 2014 vintage scored five stars in the 2017 Platter’s South African Wine Guide.

The Beautiful Lady, an aromatic Gewürztraminer, recalls Johann Graue’s wife Ilse, who brought grace, hospitality and a beautiful rose garden to Nederburg.

And The Young Airhawk, a wooded Sauvignon blanc remembers Johann and Ilse’s son, the talented winemaker Arnold Graue. Known for his winemaking prowess, he introduced many technical innovations at Nederburg.  He was also a keen young pilot, who loved to explore the wide open skies of Africa.  The 2016 vintage was awarded a 2017 The Drinks Business Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters gold medal.

The Motorcycle Marvel Rhône-style blend completes the collection with a living legend. This full-bodied wine pays tribute to the winemaker Günter Brözel, who was cellar-master at Nederburg from 1956 to 1989. A maven and a maverick, he is known for his exceptionally high standards. Getting around on a 250cc BSA motorcycle, he checked on everyone and everything to ensure his exacting demands were met. In 1985, he became the first winemaker in South Africa to win the coveted International Wine & Spirit Competition Winemaker of the Year Award.  He was a great pioneer and considered a true icon in South African winemaking.

Nederburg’s lauded Two Centuries collection will also be on offer.  Forming the apex of the winery’s multi-tiered range of wines, the range is intended as a celebration of its winemaking skill, tradition and heritage honed over more than two centuries. This luxury ensemble of hand-made wines that reflect outstanding terroir is produced from grapes sourced from the best vines within top-performing vineyard blocks, jointly identified by Nederburg’s highly-skilled winemaking and viticultural teams.

An incredible feat, the 2014 vintage of Nederburg’s Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon was recently selected as the prestigious ‘Red Wine of the Year’ in the 2018 edition (the 38th issue) of the Platter’s By Diners Club South African Wine Guide, considered the most authoritative guide to South African wine. It achieved a five-star rating and an incredible near-perfect 99 points in the newly released guide.

And that’s certainly not the end of the story. The 2013 vintage of the same wine was announced the winner of the Warren Winiarski Trophy for the best Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2017 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in the UK, judged alongside equivalents from various wine producing countries.

If not enjoyed with your meal, taste and purchase these award-winning wines and many more at Nederburg’s comfortable Visitors’ Centre, a short walk away from the manor house.  If you prefer delivery, you can source most of the wines sold at Nederburg via www.vinoteque.co.za.

The Nederburg Visitors’ Centre also offers a variety of pairings, such as the popular dessert wine pairing with sweet delights, as well as an ice cream pairing introduced exclusively for summer.

The winery also provides informative guided tours of its state-of-the art cellar and other points of interest, such as the manor house, a national monument, and Old Cellar Museum that tells the Nederburg story in wonderful artefacts and pictures.

Foreign language guides could be arranged by prior appointment. All cellar tours need to be pre-booked by contacting Nederburg.

Restaurant bookings are also advised.
