Get A Taste Of Rietvallei’s Award Winning Wines This Festive Season

The Rietvallei Estate family wine brands JMB and Estéanna have in recent months been riding a wave of recognition in prominent competitions and specialised media reports.

To be specific, these are abbreviations for family member names in the Burger family of Rietvallei Estate in the Robertson Wine Valley – whose JMB Cabernet Franc 2014 and Estéanna Sauvignon Blanc 2018 have pocketed a host of top medals and other accolades for excellence, including two exceptional 90 plus points ratings.

Rietvallei JMB, part of the Estate’s limited edition Heritage Collection Wines, derives from the initials of the late Johannes (Johnny) Martinus Burger, father of current owner-winemaker Kobus, who represents the sixth generation on this 156 year-old wine estate. Also in this collection, the Estéanna wines refer to Kobus and Elizabeth Burger’s daughters, Esté and Annie, who were the inspiration behind their creation.

This estate today boasts a diverse and highly awarded portfolio comprising 22 wines in different tiers of individualistic ranges from noble cultivars.

The JMB’s track record this year is as follows:

  • National Wine Challenge 2019 – Double Gold
  • Cabernet Franc Challenge 2019 (Winemag) – Gold Award
  • Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards 2019 – National Winner, top Cabernet Franc in South Africa

Estéanna Sauvignon Blanc 2018:

  • Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards 2019 – Double Gold
  • National Wine Challenge 2019 – Double Silver
  • Veritas Wine Awards 2019 – Silver
  • Tim Atkins 2019 SA Special Report – 90 Point Rating
  • Wooded Sauvignon Blanc Report (Winemag) – 91 Point Rating

According to Kobus Burger, the inspiration behind the JMB range was to create the finest Rietvallei has to offer in honour of his father, with the production of two single vineyard wines from the best vineyard sites on the farm – resulting in this Cabernet Franc and a  barrel-fermented Chardonnay. A big, bold and full-bodied wine with good complexity thanks to 24 months’ maturation in new French oak barrels and further development in the bottle.

The Estéanna Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is barrel-fermented and matured on the lees, elegant and full-bodied, with complexity and the structure to mature well. Its red stable mate is a classic red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, matured in new French oak barrels for 24 months.
