The wine award season towards the end of each calendar year, is always an exciting time for any winery. Each week for the past couple of months, our excitement levels were elevated as the awards, medals and stars were revealed.
Our talented winemaker and his team have been highly acknowledged by global and local wine writers and competitions. From 95 points, through Double Golds, Veritas Golds and Platter stars to the selection of our Assistant Winemaker, Phillip Theron, as a finalist in the Diner’s Club Young Winemaker of the Year.
Phillip’s selection as finalist in the Diner’s Club Young Winemaker of the Year Competition is a tremendous recognition of his talent and that of his mentor, our winemaker Johnnie Calitz. The nomination was based on Phillip’s skills and contributions in the making of our 2017 Merlot and 2017 Glen Carlou Collection Malbec, which is set to release in December 2018.

The fruit of this wine was sourced from 10 diverse blocks, each picked at different times to vary the sugar and natural acid of the grapes. Each small batch was vinified separately until the final blend was decided on. Distinctive citrus characters, green apple and pear notes are evident on the nose and palate. The extended elegant aftertaste is supported by crisp acid, finely grained tannins and soft spice notes.
