Getting to know Grenache

The Grenache vineyard at Creation represents a pioneering first planting of this cultivar in the Hemel-en-Aarde. One of the exciting opportunities arising from our now fully mature, virus-free vineyards is the ability to select exceptionally high quality pockets of grapes that provide the ultimate expression of terroir and release them in a single vineyard bottling.

The latest project from Creation cellarmaster Jean-Claude Martin is a four-barrel selection of Grenache from our Sumac vineyard. The vineyard is named for the exotic African spice, sumac, which is characterised by a certain brightness and liveliness that is evident in the wine.

The newly released Creation Sumac Grenache is described as deep crimson in colour with a secret glimmer of purple to capture the imagination. Intense aromas of cranberry, exotic spice and nuances of dark rose petal fulfil the promise. It is a cooler climate Grenache rewarding with a feast of bright pomegranate, red currant, cracked peppercorn and a sprinkling of sumac lingering on the velvety palate. The natural acidity and resulting freshness and poise make the Grenache a versatile pairing wine. Inherent savoury notes associated with the umami flavour also contribute to this food friendly character, making the Grenache an essential item in the cellar of the wine pairing enthusiast.

The release of the Creation Sumac Grenache has inspired our kitchen team to create three exciting recipes, each designed to highlight different aspects of a truly unique wine.
