We never need an excuse to drink Chardonnay, in fact we encourage it, even if it is just to celebrate this day.
Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted white wine grapes and whether oaked or unoaked it is an iconic grape, enjoyed across the globe.
We do Chardonnay extraordinarily well, it is part of the very core of Glen Carlou. It was the first varietal to be planted at Glen Carlou in all those years ago and consequently, the first wine produced (even if it was in an air-conditioned freight container acting as a cellar).
Over three decades, our Chardonnays have grown from strength to strength, today, our flagship Chardonnay has a significant local and global footprint. Recent accolades include Veritas and Michelangelo Golds and Double Golds, Sommelier Selection Awards, South African Young Wine of the Year, Novare Terroir Best Chardonnay and Best Chardonnay in Paarl. Along with superior scores from Master of Wine Tim Atkin and wine critic Neal Martin, it is clear that our Chardonnay is a favourite.
We have three superb Chardonnays in our Glen Carlou portfolio, each a reflection of their distinctive terroir and journey in the cellar. Our crisp and fruity Unwooded Chardonnay, our flagship Chardonnay and our single vineyard natural ferment Quartz Stone Chardonnay.
New Vintage Release: 2018 Quartz Stone
The 2018 Quartz Stone Chardonnay is now available in our online wine store. Come taste this superb wine!
This single vineyard Chardonnay shows an enticing light gold, is decadent and velvety and a beautiful showcase of terroir and craftsmanship. The grapes, harvested by hand from one of our oldest vineyard blocks, were treated with extraordinary care and respect to create a truly expressive wine. Before the natural ferment kicked in, the juice was split – 90% in new French oak barrels and 10% in a concrete Nomblot Egg tank. The end product, after 11 months in barrel, is a vibrant and bold Chardonnay.
Winemaker Johnnie describes the wine as having “tantalising and distinctive fruit notes of citrus, green apple and peach stone fruit, followed by butterscotch and lime notes on the mid-palate. Delivering an extended aftertaste of citrus marmalade followed by a delicate almond finish.”
