If you were a type of wine, what variety would you be?
That’s a real tough question!!
– I tend to be new-age crossed with a bit of old-school
– I prefer cooler rather than hotter temperatures, mostly Mediterranean
– I’m hoping to age for a while
– I try to be vibrant and fresh with my ideas
– I love food
– I’m lean and not too big
Must be Riesling (White) and Cinsault (Red)
You are currently producing two wines. Which one will you pick as a personal favourite if you have to and why?
Definitely Riesling! I want to be one of the Riesling ambassadors for South Africa one day. Riesling is one of the most terroir-expressive varietals, and ages like a fine woman. It’s graceful, needs no external influence to enhance its character. This variety is so versatile and complex, you could make dry, semi-sweet, and noble late harvest from the grape. It has the ability to outlive the winemaker, and allows you to enjoy freshness at lower alcohols. This is the exact same reason that I selected Cinsault too…
Share a secret about your business that we probably don’t know?
I must be the only employee in the wine industry that does not want to or earn a salary from the wine process 🙂 I push it all back into the business in order for it to grow…I might possibly be the only winemaker working as sommelier in South Africa??
What would you want to be written on your tombstone?
You can never learn less, You can only learn more! The only reason I learnt so much, is because I made so many mistakes. I lived a long life, and had many troubles, most of which never happened.
What did you wanna be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be a Doctor or a specialist because my mother has been working in a hospital all her life, and I love Biology especially the human anatomy.
3 things you cannot live without?
– My family! They always support me in everything I do.
– My bakkie (Pick-up truck) – It really is my mobile office, and id be lost without it!
– A laptop – It is my external hard drive for all the detailed information I can’t remember..
Do you dance crazy when no one’s looking?
Oh yes, especially when I’m excited. The mirror is usually the only witness.
What was the last thing you ate?
I had a full American breakfast. I prefer brunches, because I tend to have early mornings and long days.
Name one person you would never want to meet?
The owner of the World Bank! Who gave him the right to put a value to what we do and manage it?

Hmmm, Never inside one and never on myself, but out the window unfortunately..
Do you think people should eat the fish they catch or let them go?
There’s nothing as satisfying as catching a fish and thereafter grilling it as you starter. You just don’t get fresher than that!!

It would have to be Windhoek Lager on tap… I love wine, but I taste, drink, make, sell, promote, etc. Wine every single day. I need a beer after that, and would like to make some too in the future.

Do you have a secret talent and what is it?
I try and practice my ambidexterity, and took up the hobby – Poi (Fire dancing). It’s like Yoga for the brain.
Would you rather be good looking or rich?
Neither.. Just above average in both categories. If I have to choose: Rich – Coz then you could have a facelift I guess…
