Meet Backsberg`s wine barrel carpenter

All wine barrels at Backsberg are, after a life lived in the cellar storing wine, converted by our carpenter Hilton Arendse into beautiful pieces of furniture. From candleholders to wine racks to chairs and homeware items, the wood is given new life and purpose and available for purchase in our tasting room.

A strong focus on the farm is to try an recycle our ‘waste’ products. Instead of discarding the no longer usable barrels, we’ve taken it upon ourself to repurpose everything we can. In the process, we are able to employ people in creative and hands-on positions, Hilton being no exception. We empower Hilton to make long lasting furniture out of the wine barrels, all of which he designs and crafts himself by hand.

Hilton has been working on the farm for nine years, and from his workshop (built from old straw bales) he creates the pieces you can see and buy in the tasting room. The natural barrel curve is visible in each piece, and Hilton designs the pieces around the curve. The stains on the wood makes each creation unique; wood that has its own character and story.

From as little as R35 for candleholders or up to R275 for a large wine rack, your home can also be filled with this character that we’re so proud of.
