Why We Loved 2016 at De Grendel

It was a tough year, overshadowed by drought, but our Durbanville farm still found much to celebrate.

De Grendel Restaurant Named Best Scenic Restaurant in SA

We are privileged to have one of the best views of Table Mountain. Sipping a glass of De Grendel wine as you watch a sunset, or the dramatic “table cloth” sweep down the slopes, is an unbeatable experience  and hundreds of visitors agree. That is why our De Grendel Restaurant was awarded the title of Best Scenic Restaurant in the 2016 World Luxury Restaurant Awards. The restaurant was also awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, which was accounted for by the quality and quantity of reviews from visitors over the year. Thank you to all of those that shared their experience on TripAdvisor.

The De Grendel Farm Team were True Winners

De Grendel’s excellence wouldn’t exist without a dedicated team of hard workers, which the Department of Agriculture acknowledges too. In the Western Cape Farm Worker of the Year Competition, De Grendel staff took three first place positions out of five different categories, making De Grendel the best-performing farm.

A New Wine Joined our Family

A new and an old wine made an appearance on the De Grendel wine list in 2016. The De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage 2015 made a debut, hand-in-hand with the 10-year anniversary of the cellar, and the popular De Grendel Winifred was made available again in limited quantities. The Amandelboord is close to our heart as it was created to honour Sir De Villiers Graaff (2nd baronet). The Winifred also holds a special spot in De Grendel’s heart, as it is named after Lady Graaff, the wife of Sir David Graaff, 3rd Baronet. Both wines are exclusively available to De Grendel Loyalty Club members.

Eland Roamed the Tygerberg Hills Again

De Grendel has a fragile ecosystem and is thus partly a nature reserve. In other words, a safe haven for an abundance of wildlife. The reintroduction of indigenous species to the farm was a highlight of the year for us. Sir De Villiers Graaff (4th baronet) is hoping to bring indigenous game back to the Tygerberg Hill and slopes, as they were once free roaming here. New to the estate are a herd of Eland, a few Bontebok, one of which has been expected to lamb, and soon seven Red Hartebeest.
