Is Cape Town the New Global Gin Capital?

A South African plant is giving new life (and flavor) to one of your favorite spirits.

It doesn’t take much to fill up The Gin Bar in Cape Town. The space is relatively small: A beautiful old courtyard scattered with tables and chairs, hidden behind the storefront of an artisanal chocolate shop. Walking past, you wouldn’t even know it exists, but worm your way through the throng of people on a Friday evening and you’ll be lucky to find a seat.

For such a no-frills name, the cocktails at The Gin Bar are quite the opposite. Sure, you can get your average G&T, but at The Gin Bar, the gins are made with something completely unique to the area: fynbos. A group of fine-leafed shrubs that often sprout a striking array of colorful flowers, fynbos (which means “fine bush” in Afrikaans) can only be found in the southwestern part of South Africa.
