Lunch with Tshepang Molisana: The rising star of the wine world

“My heart wants to burst. I want to share everything about all of these amazing wines.” Tweeted like a true oenophile, Tshepang Molisana is breaking new ground as a wine writer to be reckoned with. Having won the 2016 Veritas Young Wine Writer Award for an essay titled Could Social Media Replace Traditional Wine Guides, she’s transcending the traditional to become her generation’s voice on all things vino.

Boschendal had the privilege of having lunch with her – a fortuitous meeting given that Molisana believes “sometimes the best stories are shared over a fantastic lunch with a winemaker and viticulturist.” Just 27 years old and having already made big strides in the magazine world, Molisana has become synonymous with telling the stories behind the wines – and using new mediums to do so.

Which is essential given the current climate. She shared, “Print publishing is going through a tumultuous transition. As a writer, my job is to inform and entertain, which means remaining informed and entertained. I am constantly learning and being inspired by people’s stories and the work that they do.”

A love of learning is something Molisana frequently talks about. She’s continuously looking to expand her wine education and finds no shortage of inspiration in a country like South Africa – world renowned for its winemaking.

And she writes in a way that opens up this world to her readers, “My duty is to try to relay the information for interested readers, to chronicle the time we are living in, to reflect the economy, winemaking conditions, wine characteristics and other information the best way I know how. Fortunately, the world is filled with talented people who tell these stories the world over and in doing so, inspire me enormously.”

We asked what she thinks of our wine of the month, over a glass (or two) of the Chardonnay Pinot Noir in question.

“There is a delicate balance that this wine aspires towards. It exhibits both the citrus and white peach characters of a Chardonnay while hinting at the red fruit of a Pinot Noir. Decadently round, it has an elegant mouthfeel while still exhibiting freshness and acidity. It pairs well with chicken and other dishes and lends itself well to summer menus. This blend allows the varietals to shine, while the rose gold label gleams. This wine is an experience.”
