Matcha and Mint Wine Cocktail

All things Asian are very trendy and matcha is one of those ingredients that we have all seen on menus and in magazines. Perhaps you’ve even tried it!

Literally meaning powdered tea, quality matcha is a powdered version of green tea offering all its benefits, only in a more concentrated form. Making matcha tea is a very important part of Japanese tea ceremonies, but since the powder’s introduction to the rest of the world, it has become a popular ingredient in both sweet and savoury dishes and it has even been the drink of choice (probably because of its high dose of antioxidants and caffeine) at the New York Fashion Week! (Read more)

With the Rugby World Cup being hosted in Japan, rugby-crazy South Africans are now even more interested in the traditions of Japanese society. And while we are experimenting with Japanese flavours added to traditional braai dishes at the Leopard’s Leap SA Table, we also have a few recipes you can try at home – such as our matcha and mint wine cocktail!

M&M Wine Cocktail Recipe


2 teaspoons matcha powder

30 ml vodka

30 ml Leopard’s Leap Classic Unwooded Chardonnay

crushed ice

1 lime, sliced

handfuls of mint

30 ml Franschhoek honey (or another quality honey)

soda water to top up


Muddle the mint, lime and honey together in a cocktail shaker and slowly add the wine, vodka and matcha powder.

Stir until fully dissolved and pour into a highball glass filled with ice.

Top up with soda water and stir again.
