McDonald’s plans to offer customers in its largest markets a choice of side salad, fruit or vegetable in place of French fries in its value meals and to push healthier beverages for its Happy Meals.
The fast-food chain announced a series of health-related commitments Thursday in partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a non-profit founded by the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association to reduce childhood obesity. The new effort to promote healthier choices comes as McDonald’s continues to face pressure from activists who want it to stop marketing to children and to improve the nutrition content of its meals.
McDonald’s said it would promote only water, milk and juice rather than soft drinks for Happy Meals on its menu boards and in advertising. The chain also will emphasize nutrition in its packaging and advertising for children.
