Miguel Chan Scores Mount Sutherland Syrah 2009 91 Points

This is the very first Syrah release from vineyard planted in 2004 and South Africa’s only continental terroir, situated in possibly one of the coldest place (in winter) and coolest by local standard (in summer) on the continent, 350 km North East of Cape Town at 1500 meters above sea level, SutherlandKaroo district, newly demarcated Wine of Origin, in the Northern Cape Geographical Unit.

Ruby red with purple rim.

Clean, expressive, quite Northern Rhone in aromatic profile, darker red fruits spectrum, ripe blackcurrant, preserved plums, Ribena like nose, cassis, intense minty blueberry, spicy oak lending delicate smoky note, earthy, slate minerals, pure fruit but borderline jammy/slight raisin note, captivating.
