Nederburg on Platter roll

Four Nederburg wines have been rated five stars in the newly published 2014 edition of the Platter’s South African Wine Guide. All white and from the 2012 vintage, they feature two wines with an unbroken five-star track record and two of the most celebrated wines offered at the Nederburg Auction.

The 2012 Ingenuity White is the sixth consecutive vintage of Nederburg’s flagship to earn a five-star rating. Every vintage since the launch of the 2007 maiden, eight-way blend, has been awarded five stars. The 2012 Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest has been similarly honoured with every vintage but one, from 2008 to 2012 rated five stars. The wine was also South Africa’s only trophy winner at the International Sweet Wine Challenge in Australia earlier this year and a gold medallist at the 2013 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).

The other two five-star wines, both dessert wines, are produced for potential selection on the annual Nederburg Auction. They are the 2012 Edelkeur and the 2012 Eminence. Edelkeur was originally launched at the debut Nederburg Auction in 1975. Neither wine is yet available for sale.

Previous vintages of both wines have been extensively awarded locally and abroad. The 2009 Eminence won the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards trophy, for South Africa’s best sweet wine retailing for over £15. It was also judged the wine of the show at the 2011 Five Nations Wine Challenge in Sydney.

At this year’s IWSC, the 2007 vintage of Edelkeur was awarded a gold outstanding medal, given only to the very best wines in the opinion of the judges. To win gold, a wine must score at least 90. Gold outstanding wines are singled out amongst these as the finest examples in their class.
