Nederburg shows five decades of its red star, Cabernet Sauvignon

Nederburg recently showcased a line-up of venerable Cabernet Sauvignon wines to selected guests in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Razvan Macici, cellar-master at Nederburg for 15 years, presented some of the cellar’s prized vintages, beginning with a 1966. He closed with the Nederburg II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, awarded a double gold medal at the 2015 Veritas Awards, and featured a Cabernet from every decade in between.

While most of the wines were made by the legendary Günter Brӧzel, who was Nederburg’s cellar-master for 33 years, from 1956 to 1989, Macici’s wines were clear evidence that he had picked up the baton from the man he still considers one of his mentors. (Brӧzel still pops into the cellar from time to time for a catch-up with the team).

The older wines were testimony to the longevity of Nederburg Cabernets and the younger wines were an expression of the same pedigree of finesse, harmony and potential to endure for many decades more.
