Nederburg’s Noble Late Harvest wins Decanter Regional Trophy

The 2013 vintage of Nederburg’s Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest has won a regional Decanter World Wine Awards trophy in London for the best South African sweet wine priced at over £15.

Only 125 regional trophies were awarded out of more than 15 000 entries. The judging panel of this prestigious international competition comprised 224 specialist tasters from around the world, including 66 Masters of Wine and 18 Master Sommeliers. Regional trophy wines are chosen from gold medal winners in a particular region and specific categories defined by wine style.

The richly aromatic wine, with delicious flavours of honey, apricots and ginger, is regularly lauded on international and local forums. The 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 vintages of the Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest were each rated five stars in Platter’s South African Wine Guide.

The 2011 vintage recently won an International Wine Challenge (IWC) trophy, the 2012 vintage was South Africa’s only trophy winner at the 2014 International Sweet Challenge in Australia and a gold medallist at the 2013 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).

Nederburg also walked away with two Decanter gold medals for the 2009 and 2010 vintages of its Private Bin Eminence. These wines are made for exclusive sale on the annual Nederburg Wine Auction.

Nederburg pioneered noble late harvest wines in South Africa with the 1969 Edelkeur, sold on the Nederburg Auction in 1975. Prized by connoisseurs, Edelkeur is still available exclusively via this channel.

Cellar master Razvan Macici, who has earned many leading awards, including the title of Diners Club Winemaker of the Year, suggests serving Nederburg’s Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest 2013 with fruit-based desserts, liver patés and blue cheeses. “It’s terrific on its own and even makes a delicious substitute for dessert.”

A 375ml bottle of Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve 2013 retails for around R82 and is also available from the farm in Paarl.
