Orange River Cellars Strikes Gold at SA National Young Wine Show

Continuing its recent superb run of form at wine competitions, Orange River Cellars garnered two Class Winners and three Gold Medals at the recent SA National Young Wine Show. The class winning wines were both White Muscadels made at the Kakamas Winery, one of the five production units in the Orange River Cellars stable.

The one wine won the class for Muscadel wines with an alcohol content of below 16% and the other reaped the award in the section for those above 16% alcohol.

These awards have cemented Orange River Cellars’  position as one of South Africa’s most awarded wineries for Muscadel production. Earlier this year the winery received top honours at the SA Muscadel Competition and was the only South African winery to achieve a spot in the Top 10 at the Muscats du Monde Competition in France which attracted entries from wineries from all over the world.

At the SA National Young Wine Show Orange River Cellars also walked away with a Gold Medal in the Class for Natural Sweet White, Blanc de Noir or Rosé Wine with a Colombar from the Keimoes Winery. The winery’s Kakamas production unit won Gold in the Other Cultivar Blended Class for a Dry Red Blend, while the Orange River Cellars Upington winery struck Gold in the Red Muscadel or Jerpiko Class.

Orange River Cellars’ marketing manager Koos Visser says that the awards showed the winery’s increasing diversity.

“We have traditionally made Muscadel of a high standard due to our ideal terroir, and this year we have seen our wines in this category reaching stratospheric heights at competitions, which has translated to increased sales,” he says. “But we are definitely showing our mettle with other wine styles, too. Not only through the two Gold medals at the SA Young Wine Show, but also with Orange River Cellars having been adjudged to be South Africa’s Best Value Cellar for 2013. A team of expert viticulturalists working closely with our grape producers, the dedicated winemakers in our five wineries and our superb team of planners and logistics specialists have made this possible.

“The Orange River is happy to take-up its rightful place as one of South Africa’s top wine regions, recognition now being given to us in the marketplace.”
