Pope Francis wonders if Mexicans will greet him with tequila

Break out the good tequila. The pope is coming.

Mexico, one of the world’s most devout Catholic countries, is in preparations for next month’s papal visit by beefing up security and raffling off event tickets, creating an official countdown clock, and even composing songs to greet his holiness. The Pope, too, seems excited for the trip, especially when it comes to tasting the local firewater.

A video that’s going viral on Mexican social media shows the pope jokingly asking a Mexican man in the Vatican if he will be greeted with some courtesy tequila upon his arrival.

The Mexican man is heard telling the pope that Mexico awaits him in February, to which the pope replies: “With or without tequila?”

“With plenty of tequila!,” the man assures him, before asking for a blessing.
