Prescient Pinotage Report 2021 Reveals Some Real South African Wine Gems

This year’s Pinotage Report sponsored by multinational financial services company Prescient attracted 58 entries received from 46 producers and these were tasted blind (labels out of sight) by a three-person panel, scoring done according to the 100-point quality scale. The report revealed some real gems under the Pinotage grape category, confirming the fact that proudly South African wine variety can certainly compete with the best on a global scale.

“Consumers will find a spread of styles among the Top 10 from Old School to New Wave,” says Christian Eedes, panel chairman and Winemag.co.za editor. “There are some wines showing plenty of fruit power but there are others that are lighter and fresher. If there was something of stylistic deadlock when it came to Pinotage five or 10 years ago, this finally seems to have been broken with producers embracing new methods and ideas when it comes to get the best out of the variety”.
