The iconic Redhill Pinotage from premier Stellenbosch estate Simonsig won its seventh Absa Top 10 Pinotage Trophy last week, making this one of the most consistently lauded wines in the history of this prestigious competition.

As the grandson of the Simonsig legend Frans Malan, Michael Frans Malan is one of the few third generation winemakers in Stellenbosch. Michael joined the Simonsig team in 2017 after gaining experience in Italy, Australia and South Africa and was appointed red winemaker this year working under cellarmaster Debbie Thompson and his father, Johan, who is Simonsig’s Director of Wine.

In her 20th year at Simonsig Estate in Stellenbosch, Debbie Thompson has been promoted to cellar master at this revered and pioneering third-generation winery. Thompson takes over the role of cellar master from Johan Malan under whom she has worked since joining Simonsig in 1999.

 

Simonsig Wine Estate of South Africa produces an extensive range of formidable red, white and sparkling wines. Renowned as one of the most reputable wine producers in the region, it is owned and operated today by the family of its founder, Frans Malan.

 

It’s summertime in the Cape Winelands, and as the days get longer and warmer, we invite you to linger on our lawns with a glass of Simonsig in your hand. We have a number of events and activities planned over the next two months, from Jazz on the Lawn and our monthly First Fizzday to Carols by Candlelight and an end of year bash to send the year out in style. Join Simonsig on the first Thursday of every month when they open their farm to the public for a sunset-celebration of Cap Classique with live music, delicious wines and an array of delectable festival foods from Cuvée. Bring your friends and family, unwind on our lawns and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Entrance is free, and R20 gets you a wine glass.

 

It’s that time of year when the corks pop and the bubbly is poured for the annual Amorim MCC Challenge, now in its 17th year.  And what better way to celebrate the arrival of Spring, than with a line-up of great local MCCs!
