Swartland Garden of Goodness: Foxes and Mount Abora

What an exciting time for South African wine. Not only has the Swartland fast become one the hottest wine regions in the world, but ‘non-traditional’ varieties are offering the consumer more choice than ever.

The old South African stalwart, Cinsaut, shines in the new release of Mount Abora Saffraan. The 2012 was raved about by the press and the 2013 continues its Pinot-like freshness, red fruit and low alcohol. The new wine, Abyssinian, is a very taut, elegant blend of predominately Mourvèdre and Cinsaut. The winemaker, Johan Meyer, expects this to age extremely well. The 2011 Koggelbos was one of Christian Eedes’ top 12 wines of last year and the 2012 is perhaps even more thought-provoking. Read more here.

Another small-production label and new release is made by a famous fox – revolutionary Chris Mullineux. His family winery allows him to scour the Swartland for small, interesting parcels of old vineyards. The other two foxes are the Schildt brothers: Pascal, an international fine wine trader; and Oliver, a designer in Johannesburg. They never produce more than 2,000 bottles per vintage and these are exclusive to Wine Cellar.

The Three Foxes Carignan is by far and away the best straight Carignan I have tasted, ever! Typically mineral, it has wonderfully pure yet balanced ripe fruit and fine tannins. The Mourvèdre is more fragrant and floral, exhibiting the same Mediterranean flair as the wines of Bandol in Provence.

All these wines are natural ferments, with no new oak, no enzymes, no filtration nor fining. 100% pure expressions of their vineyards.
