Winery of the Week: Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate

Morgenster, dating back to 1711, is a thriving wine and olive estate in Somerset West. Exceptional terroir, input from the best expertise in the world and attention to detail from visionary owner Giulio Bertrand have resulted in internationally acknowledged wines and olive products of extraordinary quality and enjoyment.

Morgenster’s Bordeaux styled red blends under the Morgenster and Lourens River Valley labels are crafted to age well by consultant Pierre Lurton, CEO of Chateau Cheval Blanc, and the local winemaking team. It is Morgenster’s policy to release its wines when they have had the benefit of being able to age perfectly. Visitors to its stylish tasting room on the banks of a tranquil reed lined dam looking onto the majestic Helderberg can compare complexities and progress of vintages from as early as 2001.

The Estate also offers tastings of Giulio Bertrand’s three Italian Collection wines from his small, highly prized vineyards of Italian cultivars: a sangiovese rosé, a super Tuscan blend based on sangiovese, and a nebbiolo.  Visitors can also enjoy a white Bordeaux styled blend and the exciting NU range of single cultivar wines from Morgenster’s new vineyards.

Where you have vines you can have olives, and the soils of Morgenster produce extra virgin olive oil that consistently ranks among the best in the world. In the authoritative Flos Olei 2014 Guide and competition, which assesses the world’s best olive oils, Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil was awarded the top score of 98 points out of a possible 100, sharing this level with only 10 other farms in the world. This followed four years of achieving 97% in Flos Olei with Morgenster being one of only seven producers in the world to have achieved this rating so consistently.
