We tend to drink more Rhône wines and Rhône varietals than anything else at Wine Cellar. Pondering as to why we are so pro-Rhône, I have come up with a few ideas.

1. We just love the tension and perfume of Syrah and adore the honesty and drinkability of Grenache. The reds and whites are generally moderate in acidity and don’t show any off-putting green flavours.

2. The wines are amongst the best value in the world when compared to other fine appellations.

3. South Africa can compete with the wines of the Rhône Valley in terms of style and quality. Our Mediterranean climate and weathered granitic soils seem to neatly suit the Rhône varieties and styling. Unfortunately our wine industry was incorrectly (in my view) modelled on that of Bordeaux and it has taken a few decades to truly understand which varieties work best.

The wines of the Rhône Valley can be quite similar to ours, making it an easy region to explore and enjoy.
