Barolo vineyards granted UNESCO World Heritage status

Piedmont’s vineyard landscape’s Langhe-Roero and Monferrato were added to UNESCO’s world heritage status at this week’s meeting in Doha. Barolo, Castiglione Falletto Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Novello and Serralunga d’Alba in the Barolo DOCG, as well as Barbaresco and Neive in the Barbaresco DOCG were added to this elite group of cultural and natural sites.

It’s about time,’ said David Berry Green, Italian wine buyer for Berry Bros & Rudd and resident of Piedmont. He described the Langhe as the ‘world’s last undiscovered fine wine region’. Read more about this in Decanter’s recent article.

How long will it take for South Africa to get onto this list? With the rigorous environmental initiatives like BWI, WIETA, IPW it may not be long.
