The Weekender | Cape Town

Right, so I shouldn’t really complain that I’ll be working the entire weekend while you all have fun, because I haven’t been to work since last month. I took leave to deal with the trauma of turning 30. Which I’ve done since my last Weekender post. I’m still here. Feels the same. What probably made the whole experience easier was the fact that I went off with 11 of my craziest, most epic mates to Mozambique, where we frolicked in the sea under the stars, while dolphins and unicorns danced on rainbows around us and stuff. I swear. So I feel okay and happy enough to be home to tell you about what a great weekend you’re in for while I watch from the sidelines.
On Thursday the cold front buggers off, leaving us with perfect conditions for a post-work sundowner at Sotano in Moullie Point. To be honest, in the past I’d be at Wakame down the road, but since they and Newport Deli closed doors (does anyone know why?) I’ve been going to Sotano. Their beer is cold, the deck is warmed by the late afternoon sun and the sushi is pretty decent. They do a mean flatbread. Try the calamari tentacles too. Yum.
Tip: between 5pm – 7pm on weekdays they have a 2-for-1 Peroni draught special along with their usual sizable craft brew selection. They also have live music on a Sunday arvo.

Friday evening it might be a good idea to get outdoors and take advantage of the warm weather by having a drink and trying the new menu at Weinhaus + Biergarten. Aka &Union. This place seems to get better and better, from the selection of wines, to the food and music. I can’t think of a reason not to go there. In fact I might go there right now.

Bree street is booming – it’s hard to keep up with the goings on each month. Best to start at the top and work your way down to take it all in – like Tahlia Hamilton in her Walk Down Bree posts – right here on MTF.

All weekend you’re spoilt for choice with two festivals on the cards. Robertson Slow Food and Hermanus Wine & Food are two you don’t want to miss this year. Between boat cruises on the Breede, the best Overberg wines, waterblommetjie bredie, craft beer, whale watching, fynbos walks, vineyard tours and live music, your weekend is pretty much taken care of. The folks in the Overberg region clearly know how to throw a festival.

But, if you feel like doing your own more laid back thing, why not take a drive up to Darling through the winding back roads of wheat farms? I know that, from next month, the flowers are spectacular on this route – but I think people tend to forget how beautiful it is just before spring – with it’s seemingly endless rolling hills of emerald green wheat. Once you get to Darling, there are a few great spots for lunch. The Marmalade Cat is always worth a visit, not just for eating in, but for their selection of locally made cheeses and salamis. Bistro 7 is also a good option for seating outdoors.
If you feel that you can’t continue eating and drinking like this, then Sunday’s weather forecast says you’ll be able to squeeze in a hike up a mountain somewhere. Anywhere. Just before you lie down on a picnic blanket in the sun on some grass with a last sneaky Sunday bottle of Overberg wine or a flask of hot chocolate and a good book. Kirstenbosch, your back garden, Green Point Park, wherever you think is best. It’ll be great. Happy weekend Western Capers – you’ve got so much to choose from – make it count!
