The wines we drink: Vondeling Chardonnay 2010

I’ve waxed lyrical about Vondeling Wines before when I wrote about the Babiana white blend. It is no secret that we are big Chenin Blanc lovers (the major component in the Babiana blend), but a lesser known fact is that I will happily sell my soul, one of my kidneys (on the internet) and give up exercise for a decent Chardonnay.

The Voor Perdeberg winery has become synonymous with excellent value for money wines.  I’ve often in private conversation aired the view that they can ask at least 40% more for their wines and I’d still happily pay for them. They really are that good. I caught myself that I was writing a rather involved tasting note about subtle power, complexity and amazing palate weight, but that is not what this short blog is about.

This is about the chardonnay from Vondeling. It sells for roughly R90 a bottle, and tastes like a R200 chardonnay. It ticks all the boxes. A little bit of oak to broaden the palate, none of that mess around with the acidity nonsense to make the wine fresh like another bladdy Sauvignon Blanc and great texture, palate weight and varietal characteristics.  See, I can’t help myself, I have to write about what the wine tastes like.  However, if you don’t have time for that kind of wine speak, here’s something to put in your pipe and smoke… The wine is bloody marvelous.
Go out, get your hands on some and when you see me again, its ok to kiss me (on the cheek mind you, I am taken) and rub my back a little. Its that good.
