The Domaine de Chevalier of SA? New Savage releases

Duncan Savage has been at the forefront of producing one of the greatest South African whites – Cape Point Isleidh. And with a decade of Isleidh experience, his skills have been honed to bring us the second releases of his spectacular Savage wines.
Duncan is known to be rather partial to one of the world’s greatest whites, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc from Pessac Léognan. It is fitting then that his 2013 shows remarkable similarities – it is a lean, Sauvignon Blanc led blend with a great mid-palate and a long finish. This wine is sensitively crafted, harnessing its fine acidity to balance the subtle oak integration and ending in refined austerity. Very Bordeaux-like at a fraction of the cost, we think.
Master of Wine Greg Sherwood agrees on the French similarities with the red too: ‘The 2012 bouquet once again harks back to the classic reds from the Southern Rhone in France, with a traditional blend of 62% Syrah, 14% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre and 12% Cinsault.‘ The 2012 exudes refined florals and lifted spice, offering delicious drinking not dissimilar to a Crozes Hermitage. In essence, a beautifully balanced, elegant red wine that expresses Duncan Savage’s deftness of touch.

Christian Eedes’ tasting note: Savage White 2013
A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the latter up to 44% from 30% in the case of the 2012. Winemaker Savage is concerned that it is still very tight but I think it’s already showing wonderfully. Lime, tangerine, peach, blackcurrant and some white pepper in the background. Lovely creamy texture offset by zingy acidity. Really characterful with concentrated fruit but also some leesy funkiness. 93/100.
Tim Atkin’s tasting note: Savage Red 2012

The second release of Duncan Savage’s own wine is even better than the first, and that’s saying something. It’s a Syrah based blend with some Mourvèdre and Cinsaut. Clove and pepper spice, haunting perfume, sleek oak, a touch of greenness from stems and appealing raspberry coulis and redcurrant flavours are enhanced by subtle oaking. 95/100.
