A Walk down Bree Street Part 6: Fire & Ice Hotel for Milkshakes

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice has a reputation for being a little different, for making the extra effort in the hopes of creating brand ambassadors and a whole load of other clever marketing things.
I’ve never been particularly impressed by the Fire & Ice — their restaurant menu is average and over priced, and the staff don’t pay very much attention and come across as pretentious and aloof.
BUT they do have great milkshakes and pretty cool bathrooms. I have had many post Bree Street dinner strolls to Fire & Ice for their milkshakes for dessert! They have an extensive milkshake menu with some really exciting flavours, such as Aero, strawberries and cream, Nosh and espresso. My personal favourites are the Lindt, Oreo and Ferrero Rocher flavours. The small versions — the ones pictured here — are R35, and the bigger ones are R45.

And they even have grown up milkshakes which are spiked with alcohol!
The Ferrero Rocher is fantastic, and it honestly tastes like you’re drinking Ferrero Rocher through a straw — which is absolutely delicious! The milkshakes are great and super thick — which is a win! I would recommend trying these milkshakes because of all the interesting flavours they have! A perfectly decadent dessert on New Church Street!

Fire & Ice has 6 individually themed bathrooms. My favourite is the stage-fright bathroom, where you have pictures of people’s faces above you and lots of mirrors, so where ever you look people are looking at you! Very funny. They also have the temptation bathroom, which is a naked man standing behind a towel rail. So when you pull the towel back to see what’s there, an the alarm goes off!!

Another interesting feature of Fire & Ice is the ‘Coughinroom’, which is a play on the words ‘coughing’ and ‘coffin’. This smoking room has coffins as chairs, and the vending machine is a tomb stone. The best part is: if you look up, the view is a bunch of people looking down into a coffin.
