The Show Guy’s Weekender: Cape Town

I have quite a diverse array of musical events for you this weekend:  acoustic folk collaborations, an outdoor Psytrance party, a block party featuring Far Too Loud from the UK, and a regular, bi-weekly Drum n Bass Sunday Beer-Braai-Bass party to wind down your weekend.
Let’s kick this party off outside, and invite all the neighbours!
The Assembly Block Party
Friday 29 August 2014 .
The Assembly
It’s not the first time Assembly is throwing a bash out in the streets and it clearly works.  They’re shutting down Constitution Street to create a block party with 3 stages, all connected for easy access, with food stalls, visuals, games, bars, all the ingredients needed to shake up the neighbourhood. Okay, you’re probably looking out the window, clutching your blanky while reading this, thinking it’s crazy to party outside this time of year.  But, dancing warms you right up, and with a line-up including Christian Tiger School, Jakobsnake, Jamie Saint & DDE, Beach Party, an After Hours DJ Set (sing-a-long classics), and Far Too Loud from the UK, you’ll be moving all night.  Listen to Far Too Loud’s “Boom!” on Soundcloud and tell me you sat still during all that… LIES!
Tickets . R 50 early bird & R 80 general on Webtickets . R 100 at the door

Now that your weekend is off to a great start, maybe you’re either hanging like a beeyatch or just getting warmed up.  Well, I’ve got something for both scenarios:
Cape Town Folk & Acoustic Music Festival
Saturday 30 August 2014 .
Baxter Theatre
If acoustic folk music is your vibe, you won’t get better than this.  The gimmick here is that it’s not just a straight forward line-up where one musician follows the other, this is all about collaborations and seeing artists together on stage that you wouldn’t normally get to experience.  It also combines legends, well-known artists, newcomers and even a few that auditioned to be on the bill.  Artists include Vusi Mahlasela, Ard Matthews, Farryl Purkiss, Mark Haze, Jesse Jordan, Louise Day, Digby and the Lullaby, Dave Ferguson, and even fellow MTF contributor Jeremy Douglas, and many more.
Tickets . R 165 – R 185 .

Sunflower Festival
Saturday 30 – Sunday 31 August 2014 .
Ostrich Farm
There’s nothing chilled about this one.  Last year, the Sunflower popped it’s head up before Spring was even “Sprung” and it came with some mixed feelings from the trance community.  Sprung has signalled the start of the outdoor season for years and suddenly this party arrived (at the Ostrich Farm no less, not a beautiful far-away land).  For me, I wasn’t too keen on the idea at first, but it’s really not the same thing.  Sunflower (family of Side Show and One World) feels more like a club experience taken outside.  It’s not the same as your regular trance party, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.  You have a different location (where some big acts and festivals have been before), a different crowd, but the music… well, have a look at this:  International acts include Day.Din (GER), Interactive Noise (MEX), Coming Soon (ISR), and locals like Deliriant, The Commercial Hippies, Sway, Broken Toy, sHiFt, Feedback, Bruce, Portal and many more.   Nothing wrong with that!  And it’s not like it’s on the same weekend as Sprung, so do both!
Tickets . R 240 early bird . R 280 general . R 320 at the door

Not done with your weekend just yet?  Want to go all the way until you can’t deny Monday is upon you?  Read on!
Cold Turkey
Sunday 31 August 2014 .
The Train Lodge
It’s moved from Woodstock to Crusaders and now to The Train Lodge, but the key elements have stayed the same:  great beats, braaiing, beer, and the best dressed hipsters you’ll ever see in one spot.  The doors open at 3pm so go early and get the full experience.  Damascvs, Dank, Maramza, Einstein Adonis, Blotchy, and more build up to Dookoom at 00:15 to make you properly regret your bad life decisions when you wake up early for work on Monday… well, it depends really.  For me, that’s a great life decision!
Tickets at the door . R 30 < 4pm > R 50.

Well, those are my #ShowGuyPicks for the weekend in Cape Town.  For more events, check out www.theshowguy.co.za.
