The wines we drink: Mulderbosch Single Vineyard Series Chenin Blanc

Single vineyard wines are interesting creatures.  It is a reflection of the best wine a winemaker can produce from a single site; it’s not about making the best wine from a specific variety or showing off your prowess as winemaker.  This makes for unique stuff in the bottle.

Mulderbosch has released a Single Vineyard Series Chenin Blanc to showcase 3 single vineyards and maintained the same winemaking practice for each (free run juice, neutral barriques for fermentation and spontaneous ferment, 10 months’ maturation in barrel).
Vineyard Block A from more sandy soils, influenced by the proximity of False Bay produced a slighty sweeter wine (4,5g/l) dominated by pineapple and citrus.  Vineyard Block S2 (my favourite on the day): Characterised by soils derived from Malmesbury shale the wine shows citrus, apricot and gentle baking spice.  Vineyard Block W (the Navigator’s choice of the day) comes from granite derived soils and is exposed to wind leaving the wine bolder, more powerful, with dramatic fruit expression aided by a bold structure.
I love experiments like these – it gives us some insight into that often used, but seldom understood word: Terroir.
