This month on the 18th of September I will be holding the fourth annual charity wine event at the Two Oceans Aquarium, to raise money for sports equipment for a school in Makapanstad. Enjoy tasting wine from fourteen different wineries, while walking through the aquarium and checking out all of the different types of marine life, all while helping raise money for a good cause!
Ever since I moved to South Africa (almost four years ago), I wanted to give something back and help the less fortunate. I therefore decided in 2011 to hold a wine event where people could enjoy wine, while we raise money for a community that need our help. It was hard to decide who to support as there are so many communities and groups that can benefit from the money, so I asked my friends in Cape Town who they thought needed the money most. A friend then introduced me to Julie from the Heartfelt Project, and after hearing their story and how much she has done for the community in Makapanstad, I decided that I would also love to help this community.
 
As the Heartfelt Project supports ten ladies by providing employment and opportunities, we felt it would be nice to hold these events to raise money for the children in the Makapanstad community. From there, we decided to get in contact with the principals of a few schools and find out what the main necessities were. The list was quite extensive, so we decided to focus on school resources, which the children can immediately benefit from; such as books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, puzzles, wall charts, globes, pens, pencils, etc.
 
This year is our fourth year hosting the event. Tickets are R180 per person, which includes entrance into the aquarium, a glass and Heartfelt wine-tag, tastings from fourteen different wineries, a light meal and glass of Du Toitskloof wine. At around 8.30pm, we move in to the predator’s section for the auction.
 
In previous years we have spent the money on educational resources for several schools in Makapanstad, and this year we will spend the money on sports equipment. We are really hoping to raise enough money to buy two soccer goal posts, soccer balls, cones, netballs, hoola hoops, skipping ropes and hopefully more, depending on how much money we raise.
