De Krans, SA’s 2014 Champion Port

De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp has been awarded the sought after SA Champion Port Trophy, for a vintage port at the 2014 SA Young Wine Show. The awards ceremony took place at a gala event in Cape Town on Friday, 22 August. A total of 1972 wines from the 2014 vintage competed side by side, with only 17 wines earning the title of champion wine.De Krans’ winning vintage port is produced from Touriga Nacional grapes and will undergo further barrel maturation before it is bottled early in 2016. ‘2014 was a challenging year with lots of rain in the summer,’ comments De Krans winemaker Louis van der Riet. Slow ripening allowed for beautiful aromas of violets and chocolate with a firm tannin structure, which will result in a port with excellent ageing potential. This is the second time in three years that De Krans has been named at the SA Champion Port, after being awarded this title in 2012 as well. The De Krans Tawny Port and Vintage Port were named Class Winners, respectively, at the same event. This latest achievement follows hot on the heels of the award for Best Cape Port at the 2014 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, awarded to the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2011 in June this year. Earlier this month the same port was named the Best Port in South Africa at the 2014 SA Terroir Wine Competition. For more information on De Krans and its range of ports and value-for-money wines visit www.dekrans.co.za.
