A Walk Down Bree Street Part 7: Orinoco

Whenever I hear the word Orinoco I am brought back to many childhood memories of the Wombles. But in fact- Orinoco is more popularly known for being the name of one of the longest rivers in South America with the majority of the river running through Venezuela.
Orinoco is a gorgeous restaurant at 17 Bree Street and as the name suggests they don’t serve Wombles- but Venezuelan food.

Orinoco is absolutely fabulous for a long list of reasons. I love their tapas, I love their main courses, they make one of my favourite desserts (tres leches), they have Secateurs Chenin on their wine list, they have the most fantastic atmosphere and they love pouring shots of tequila. All in all Orinoco is an amazing spot at the bottom of Bree which I’m constantly recommending.
But now I have another reason for why they are so fabulous – their Tuesday night Tapas Special! Every Tuesday from 5pm til 9pm you will arrive to a gorgeous seasonal menu that’s all available at half price. The food is top-notch quality, packed with flavour and made super fresh. Every month the special tapas menu will change with new and exciting seasonal options.

Some of my favourites on their tapas menu include the cheese and ham croquettes. These must be the best croquettes I’ve ever had! They are crispy balls with smoked ham and cheese filling for R60 (R30 on special). I could sit all day eating plates and plates of them. Creamy and cheesy and delicious served with caramelised onion and slow roasted tomatoes to cut some of the richness. These are outstanding – and we had a big discussion about who was getting the bigger half of the third one!!

Another must try is the roast beef tapas which are made up of bread croutons with rare beef slices in onion marmalade and Dijon sauce for R80 (R40 on special). Ah but these were delicious! The beef is seriously tender and cooked to perfection. The sweet and tart onion marmalade with the crispy bread and rich cream cheese worked brilliantly together!
We had 4 amazing dishes, with wine and beer and the bill came to R200 for two very happy and full people. I think Orinoco is an absolute steal especially on their Tuesday tapas night!
