SPIER SECRET FESTIVAL 2014

Local and international experts on food and wine will present talks, workshops, tastings and dinner events at the Spier Secret Festival’s conference on Friday, 24 October 2014 at Spier wine farm. The Spier Secret Market offers Spier wine and the finest local food and produce on Saturday, 25 October.
The Spier Secret Festival celebrates the farm’s rich vinous heritage, with attendees experiencing Spier 21 Gables, Spier’s flagship wine range— which is named after its historic gables — focusing on the heritage varietals Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. Highlighting their ethical food production, the Spier Secret conference aims to explore artisanal and sustainable farming, cooking and eating.
Vanessa Marx, the executive chef of Cape Town eatery Dear Me, will educate guests on what goes on their plate by looking at how food is produced and where it comes from. Marx is passionate about creating fresh food using seasonal, sustainable and locally sourced ingredients; this includes using only SASSI green-listed fish. She is a leading voice in the culinary world, hence her Eat Out’s award for promising young talent.
Ole Hansen, a Norwegian salmon smoker, will be explaining his approach to sustainably-sourced salmon. Hansen & Lydersen, his family’s smokehouse, operates in Stoke Newington, London. He sources fish from a family-run farm and insists that his suppliers adhere to strict sustainable harvesting standards and welfare practices. In 2012 he was awarded an Honorary Young British Foodie Award for ‘his commitment to the family business and top quality salmon’.
And if that’s not enough, Sheryl Ozinsky and Kurt Ackerman, two of the Oranjezicht City Farm’s founding volunteers, will also be presenting the Food Dialogues Report. This report is inspired by a ten-part series of talks about food, urban and farming issues held earlier this year.
If you’re a food-lover, and moreover an ethically produced food-lover, you’ll want to get your tickets here.
