Winery of the Week: Stellenbosch Vineyards

Stellenbosch Vineyards is proud to launch its new contemporary tasting facility on Welmoed Estate, just outside Stellenbosch, as well as its collaboration with Kokkedoor celebrity judge Nic van Wyk in opening the exciting new Bistro 13.
Visitors to the new tasting room can enjoy Stellenbosch Vineyards wines in comfortable, stylish surroundings. The venue is tastefully decorated to honour Welmoed Estate’s rich history stretching back to 1690, but at the same time keeping up with modern trends of grey walls, wooden elements and plush arm chairs, injecting a bit of luxury into your wine tasting experience.

“We want people to feel as comfortable as they do at home,” says tasting room manager Cobus Steyn, “and we encourage people to spend the whole afternoon here and return with friends.”
The jewel in the crown of Stellenbosch Vineyards’ portfolio is the blockbuster The Flagship Petit Verdot 2010. Other wines include the multi-award winning Credo range, Stellenbosch Vineyards’ signature range showcasing the best of Stellenbosch, the innovative Four Secrets sparkling Shiraz that blends four vintages of the same wine, traditional Welmoed and Arniston Bay Infusions, a range of lightly infused low-alcohol wine-based drinks. Apart from The Flagship, all will be available for tasting here. Peckish tasters can order a food platter to accompany their wine. Coffee, tea and soft drinks are also available as non-alcoholic options.

“Stellenbosch Vineyards is a significant player in the South African wine industry,” says MD Eduan Steynberg, “and this elegant new venue really befits our portfolio of award-winning wines.”
Stellenbosch Vineyards also welcomes renowned celebrity chef Nic van Wyk to its family. Nic, one of the judges on the popular KykNET series Kokkedoor, has opened a number of top restaurants in the Winelands, including Terroir. His involvement in the building project from the architects’ blueprints to the choice of paint means he is now able to cook in his dream kitchen.
He is aptly assisted by sous chef Juan van Zyl, previously at Rust and Vrede. It is a family friendly restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Diners can expect firm favourites with a twist, like his take on sweet and sour lamb rib in a salad, steak tartare and pork fillet. Kids can pick from the Munchkin Menu with healthy options like chicken and broccoli bake and fish fingers with ‘green’ (courgette) fries. An outdoor jungle gym will be erected in October and there are rolling lawns for kids to run around.

The breakfast menu averages at R70 per head, a three course menu averages in at R220, while the ten course tasting menu, which is reserved for 20 covers per evening, R260.
The wine list currently consists mostly of Stellenbosch Vineyards wine labels, with wine farms in the area also being featured.  Nic plans to gradually add more wine from smaller producers or wines that offer something different, including international wines.
Don’t leave without…
…treating yourself to a well-deserved glass of wine, relaxing in a comfortable chair either by the fire, or outside enjoying the sunshine.
