Explore: Southern Suburbs

I love Cape Town! Everything about this city amazes me! The bustling CBD, the beautiful Winelands, the delicious food, the quaffable wine, the markets, the views, the people, the life – we are spoilt for choice and we are spoilt for area too. There is something to do in pretty much every area in the Western Cape and it’s all just too exciting. Take Stellenbosch for example – they have their wine farms and award winning restaurants, their annual wine and cheese festivals, weekend markets, art exhibitions and gorgeous getaway spots and they are all a mere 30-40 minutes’ drive from the City.
Then we have the Southern Suburbs – I’ve been a Southern Suburbs girl since I moved to Cape Town 17 years ago and I don’t think that I could live anywhere else. Yes, I love exploring Cape Town and all its surroundings but I also really love taking in everything that’s on offer in our little neighbourhood. I hope to introduce you to a few hidden gems along the way and I also hope to excite you enough to visit some of the well-known hot spots on your next day off. We have plenty of hot spots… here are my top 3:
The Boomslang at Kirstenbosch Gardens

Kirstenbosch Gardens has given us another reason to love the outdoors by building a tree canopy walkway that winds its way through the trees and bursts out above the canopy giving spectacular panoramic views of the mountains and gardens. The Boomslang is available at no extra cost once you have paid the entrance fee to enter the Gardens. Don’t forget to take your picnic, wine and book and spend a lazy afternoon under one of the many trees at Kirstenbosch Gardens.
Rose Picking at The Chart Farm

By far one of the most peaceful and relaxing morning outings. There is something quite magical about walking through rows and rows of bright and colourful roses. Smelling, choosing and collecting from the very best rose bushes and ending up with a gorgeous bunch of fresh roses to take home with you. Roses cost R4 each (and half price on Sundays). There is also a lovely little coffee shop to grab a coffee and a bite to eat after.
Cricket days at Newlands

There is nothing quite like a day at Newlands Cricket Ground (NCG). It is almost guaranteed that you will bump into someone you know and you will definitely see the odd smurf, wallie, cheerleader in the crowds. Keep an eye out for upcoming games and head out for a day(s) packed with friends, beer, cricket and fun in the sun.
I have loads more hot spots to share with you… some of them will be ones you already know about and have been to plenty of times before and others will be totally new and exciting. I hope you’ll enjoy exploring the Southern Suburbs with me.
