Alex’s Weekender: Johannesburg

So Jo’burg has woken from its slumber and everybody has returned looking a nicely toasted marshmallow (good luck for when that starts to peal and you all look like snakes shedding their skin).
Until such time here are some fun, and interesting places to go and things to do to show off that golden skin of yours.

Thursday night you have two great options, both in Braamfontein.
If you’re feeling fit and ready to punch the new year in the face there is the Jozi Hustle. A mad dash through Braam on your bicycle. Critical Mass is a gentle ride, almost a sightseeing experience. This is all about speed.
Race through the city, fixed route, any bike, any rider, free. Race it or just ride it.
It’s a really great group of people that organise the event, and everyone generally sticks around for a beer afterwards, which always has the possibility of evolving into the maddest after party. Its dark, dirty, (a little dangerous), its downtown and its damn fast! Race at own risk (but really don’t let that put you off its a lot of fun), marshalling by the greatest ThinkBike Marshals.
There will be a fun group that doesn’t race, so all can join!

Those of you that share my opinion that a good time does not include sweating (with some exceptions) will probably be more at home at Kitcheners with a cold one.
This Thursday is the final Joburg Show of Stolen Pony’s The Rumours Are True tour.
THe show will be an acoustic(ish) rendition of Eve Rakow’s own brand of DIY Pillow cry dream pop (because ever artist is unique like a flower and needs their own personal genre) feat. Garren Munro (The Pranks).
Eve’s Music is ethereal and a great soundtrack to a good night out
It’s also a free show!

Friday is a choice between heavy guitar riffs and then some urban edge.
if you fall on the Rock and Roll side of things. There is Temple of Doom at Rumours. Its definitely not my favourite venue, but The Make Overs are one of my favourite bands so it more than balances out.

If Rap, and Hip Hop are more your thing then you will not want to miss the Across The Bridge Sessions at the Bassline: The Birth of R.A.P aka Rhythm and Poetry with BCUC and Bittereinder
This theatrical event brings together the talents and “consciousness” of the live phenomenon – BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) and Bittereinder, described as a three piece Think-Dance-Machine from South Africa specialising in the world’s greatest Afrikaans electro rap.
Both bands have their roots with the West Africa Griots or storytellers travelling as slaves to America and reemerging in the black consciousness art movement of African Americans with the likes of Gil Scott-Heron which developed into the RAP we know today.

After a day spent lounging at the pool, keep Saturday low key and take a walk over The Bioscope for their back to work special screening of the 90s cult classic: Office Space.
Tickets are R45 ticket and a R20 drink of your choice. That sounds like a great deal to me. The pizza at the chalkboard is pretty good too so you’ll be covered on both the thirst and hunger front. If you’re not feeling pizza, Little Addis next door makes amazing Ethiopian food.
Movie synopsis
Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) is a computer programmer working for Initech in Houston. Every day, he and his friends Samir (Ajay Naidu) and Michael Bolton (David Herman as not THAT Michael Bolton), suffer endless indignities and humiliations in their soulless workspace from their soulless boss, Bill Lumbergh (Gary Cole).
For Peter, stuck in his cookie-cutter apartment with paper-thin walls and IKEA furniture, every day is worse than the one before it — so every day is the worst of his life. To cap it off, Initech has now hired a pair of “efficiency experts” to downsize the company.

Sunday sees one of the first exhibition openings of the year. City Below, a solo exhibition by Lorenzo Nassimbeni
Its Happening at the Nirox Gallery in Maboneng. This means that if you want to make a day of it there is lots to see and do in the neighbourhood, From Market on Main, to some Salsa on the rooftop bar of Canteen.
City Below is an exhibition exploring and exposing the existing subterranean architecture of the city of Johannesburg. The exhibition will see the unveiling of an Invisible or Imagined City represented in the form of a large mural.
City Below offers an opportunity to view a representation of a part of the city of Johannesburg which, for many, is not visible in everyday life. Once the exhibition is over, the mural will be erased, and the City Below be returned to the imagination.
