Alex’s Weekender: Johannesburg

Most of us have only been back at the grindstone for about two weeks now and are probably already longing for another holiday – if you’re anything like me at least.
Luckily, we still have weekends – most of us do – and even more luckily here in Joburg. There is a smorgasbord of interesting and fun things to do here. So without further ado, here are my top picks of things to keep you entertained this weekend.
Friday, 22 January 2015
Friday night I recommend going to my least favourite venue to see my favourite local band. Bye Beneco is playing at Rumours Lounge along with the Anti-Retrovinyls and Atom Band. It really takes a lot for me to recommend somebody to endure the claustrophobia that is their dance floor so, when I recommend voluntarily going there without the aid of coercion by friends you should know its going to be one of the greatest nights.

This Sunday is the first Ice Cream Sunday of the year! I know I include Ice Cream Sunday in every Weekender at the end of the month but it really is that amazing. Paul’s one off monthly flavours are simply a must for any ice cream lover (that’s the entire population right?).
They’re playing their cards close to their chest this month and haven’t released a menu yet, but Paul has yet to let me down on the great and innovative flavours front so, expect anything from cereal milk to savoury cream cheese ice cream with nachos.

After you’ve indulged in your share of deliciousness why not spend the afternoon taking a walk through some of Joburg’s history with a walking tour hosted by Joburg Places?
See the best and most historic part of Johannesburg. Explore the incredible stories of Gandhi and Mandela – two world leaders who started their careers as lawyers in Johannesburg. We visit Gandhi Square and Chancellor House (original, 1952 law offices of Mandela & Tambo), as well as Joburg’s outdoor mining museum along Main Street.
