Alex’s Weekender: Johannesburg

January is finally over and the amazing things happening in and around our great city have kicked into overdrive. There really is too much to fit into this one Weekender so I will do my best to dish up just the juiciest pieces. Without further ado the greatest things to do this weekend are:
Thursday, 29 January 2015
Thursday night is cultural night this week. First off we have the opening of Wayne Barker’s Normal Man at Circa. Just going by Dr Gerhard Schoeman’s description below I am very keen to see it. I’ll definitely be there on behalf of the More than Food team.
“The normal man in Wayne Barker’s latest exhibition at Circa, in Johannesburg, is the visible and invisible man, everyday man, ordinary man, anonymous man, every man and everyman. Even kings and queens, geniuses, and seekers of 15 seconds or a lifetime of the spotlight are normal, all too normal. Even our abnormalities are normal. Every man also implies every woman – all of us live and die. If in this inescapable and terrifying fact alone – we are in solidarity.”
 – Dr Gerhard Schoeman

Tonight is also the opening of the Epicene Butcher. This is a performance I have seen at every opportunity I have got. the first being at the Grahamstown festival in 2013.
In this production, the art of kamishibai is mis-used by the creators to tell stories of lust, beauty, honour and violence. The culmination of which is something not unlike an ex-patriots experience of Japan.
Directly translated, kamishibai means ‘paper play’. It is a traditional form of Japanese street theatre that’s noisier than Buto, and funnier than Kabuki. Whilst living in Japan, Jemma Kahn studied kamishibai, under veteran performer Rokuda Genji. Kahn and Rokuda wrote and performed together for over a year – and now you can watch kamishibai for the first time in South Africa.
The show’s title story, The Epicene Butcher goes back to Japan’s Edo period (1603 – 1868) to tell the gothic tragedy of Japan’s most beautiful woman and most talented butcher. Expect beautiful pictures and horrible ideas.

Tonight is Phantom of the Opera for which Composer Paul Hanmer will provide an improvised soundtrack. Paul will be joined by Berlin based saxophonist ‘Fox’.
Friday night will be the screening of The Iron Mask, again with an improvised performance by Paul Hanmer, this time accompanied by acclaimed jazz bassist Peter Sklair.
