Another weekend barrels down towards us and it’s going to be a massive wreck. Semblances of your dignity scattered like so much confetti across the dance floor, there for you to pick up come Monday morning.

The worst part is it will start slow. You can attend a presentation given by some of Joburg’s creatives, attend an exhibition opening hobnob with the cultural elite. Spend the day in the sun remembering simpler times being lulled into believing Monday will never come, indulging in the finest food and drink, and Sunday can be spent engaging with the human condition and the interminable drive to not just survive but to prosper at all costs.

Thursday 12 March 2015

Thursday is the ever popular design share party. If you ever wondered what goes through the minds of those that somehow manage to just disgorge creative works into the world, this is the place to find out.

This year the design share party will be doing a tour of Joburg’s galleries so you will be given insight into the space as well as those that make use of it. It really isn’t something to be missed for all those creatively inclined.

Friday 13 March  2015

Friday sees us heading to Hallmark Towers for the opening of internationally acclaimed artist Mat Chivers’ exhibition Altered States.

Chivers aims to explore the moment when human beings attained modern consciousness but more importantly to explore this moment in evolutionary time. It is also the the first cultural event in the story of re-development of this iconic building by David Adjaye Associates and as such mirrors the themes of the exhibition on a much more real level as the we can witness and be directly part of Joburg’s ongoing evolution and regeneration.

Saturday 14 March  2015

On Saturday give your mind and body a bit of a rest and take a relaxed drive out to Nirox Sculpture park for Retrofest.

Retrofest, now in its third edition, features a selection of South Africa’s finest original acoustic musicians performing their renditions of the most influential songs from a time when music changed the world. Headlining the festival is legendary American singer-songwriter Shawn Phillips who will be performing his own original compositions from that era. He will be supported by some of South Africa’s most talented along the lines of Nakhane Touré, Lucy Kruger, Naming James, Gareth Wilson & Southern Wild.

Delicious offerings to fill your belly will be courtesy of The Epicurean Emporium: a collective of high-end food stalls from the burgeoning food & design markets in and around Johannesburg, with emphasis on naturally and locally-sourced options. It is guaranteed to be a full day of Music, Food, Art & Nature.

Sunday 15 March 2015

And Finally Sunday we head back into the inner city and our inner demons for Colbert Mashile’s solo exhibition at NIROX projects in Arts on Main.

The exhibition titled Beast of Burden was conceived on the idea of how the beastly attitude in man often rears its head unexpectedly. The instinctive voracious manner of survival is so imbedded in man that it becomes the sole instigator of power relations in our modern society. It might be a slightly heavy way to end the weekend, but if it all gets a bit much for you, you can always slip away to Market on Main (literally around to corner) for something delicious and maybe a drink or two to soothe your troubled mind.
