Alex’s Weekender: Johannesburg

Lets Swing It

The week in which we go in search of meaning in the urban youth culture of Johannesburg. Watch bad-good kung-fu movies while slurping down noodles. Visit what is fast becoming my favorite little venue for pop-ups. Party for the planet, and while I am a bit stuck for something for you to do on Sunday I can give you some insight into what you should be doing next Wednesday instead.

Thursday 09 April  2015

If that’s not your thing then perhaps catching the most quintessential sub genre of action movie may be. I’m talking about the Kung-Fu movie. I do not not know a single man or boy (and lets be honest men are just bigger boys) that has not at least once in their lives finished watching a kung-fu movie with great ambitions of being the next Bruce Lee. Subsequently walking around punching the air making weird monkey noises for three days.

This week you can freely indulge your man-child by popping into the Bioscope for some Noodle Box Cinema.

This months film, Fists of Fury, stars the king of kung-fu himself, Bruce Lee. This movie is in my top 5 cheesy kung-fu movies and will have you punching invisible bad guys in the face in no time.

Last week I gave the usual art Thursday event a skip in favour of shaking your ass. This week I am not going to let that happen. Opening at the Goethe Institute (the one on Jan Smuts) is Musa N. Nxumalo’s photographic exhibition: In Search of…

In this exhibition Nxumalo presents the Alternative Kidz and In/Glorious bodies of work. A look at ‘the melting pot that is urban youth culture in Johannesburg’. Having grown up in Soweto these images can be seen as partial self-portraits, representing a world in which the artist is personally immersed, but they are also enigmatic images that reach far beyond their immediate context.

I think if you ever want to get a clear idea of what the future hold for South Africa you need look no further at what the youth are doing, and if this imagery is anything to go by I think things are going to be just grand.

Friday 10 April  2015

Friday sees the next instalment of the next big pop-up to well “pop-up” at Unit 8. Most of you probably salivating at the thought of Paul’s next big Ice Cream adventure at the mere mention of this venue, but this new little once a month bar is fast becoming the next big thing.

Everyone I know that has been thus far has only lamented that it is only once a month.

Think concept cocktails, great coffee (because it is never too late in the evening for a caffeine buzz), amazing food, and of course live music to keep you entertained.

Back Yard Pop Up

Saturday 11 April 2015

Saturday its time to get you dancing shoes on again, or to replace the ones you burnt out last week. The grand pooh-bah of swing Michael Lesar is throwing one of the biggest Lets Swing It parties to date.

Not only that but they are launching a new rockabilly stage, and the debut of Jo’burg’s all new electro swing band Full Swing. The sounds and styles of the 1920s / 1930s turned on their head and smuggled into the 21st century. The music of the 1st great  depression with the technology of the 2nd.

I am so stupidly excited for this I’ve even broken out the bathtub gin and Brill Cream in preparation.

DETAILS:

Sat 11 April, 8:00 pm

Mi House, 36 Rogers Road, Selby.

Tickets online: R80 | R100 at the Door.
