Paula’s Weekender: Cape Town

EuropaShip

The season of The Wine Festival is upon us! There’s SO much going on in the Western Cape this weekend guys. Firstly, after a mild week, the weather is forecast to warm up and make for good outdoorsy conditions.

This is the first weekend I’ve had off all month, so I’m freaking excited to do some stuff.

Europa2

Today, this beautiful old ship (that I weirdly mentioned falling in love with on a previous Weekender post) arrives at the Waterfront. The Bark Europa will be docked for just over a week – you can go down there, go aboard, and meet her rad crew.

I’ve written a little (okay long-ish) post about them and the sail to Antarctica we were a part of in February this year. Hopefully it’ll get your juices flowing to plan an epic trip of your own!

TigersMilk

On Thursday night some mates and I will check out Tiger’s Milk in the dirty south. Muizenberg has some quirky little spots serving hipster food – this isn’t one of them. It’s owned by the Harbour House giants so is by no means an underdog. Which is also fine – because you’re pretty sure to get some decent food and service. I’ve heard good things. ‘Top notch dude food’ is how they describe it on their website.

On Friday evening the Barrels and Beards Harvest Celebration kicks off in Bot River. For a different sundowner vibe only a short drive from Cape Town (far enough to make a weekend of it though) you could hang out on the ‘stoep’ of the legendary Botrivier Hotel   with some bearded locals and try the excellent wood-fired pizzas at the Shuntin’ Shed.

The celebrations continue on Saturday – you need to book for these tastings and for the beard showdown though – so send them an email because tickets are limited.

Pinotage&Biltong

Also on Saturday, the first Pinotage and Biltong Festival takes place at L’Avenir Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Live music, food and casual seating on their lawns or on the edge of the dam, this sounds like a lovely laid back day out. Tickets here.

Spoilt for choice! Stellenbosch is also hosting their craft beer festival at Klein Libertas Theatre. More live music, vibes and food to be had in the winelands, except this time it’s locally brewed beer that we’re celebrating.

Stelenbosch

Lastly, and to confuse you more, and if you’re wanting to keep it local, then Constantia Food and Wine festival is on all weekend on the cricket oval at Constantia Uitsig… This is one of my favourite festivals on the calender because it’s close enough to town get a taxi with your mates and – because they really focus on the food just as much as the wine – there’s always an array of yummy choices.

Constantia1

On Saturday night, Greenpop are hosting the next Cool As Folk music evening at Side Show. Cycle or walk there (meeting point is in Church Square at 18:30) and support a fantastic organization of people who really put their words into positive action when it comes to the future of our planet.

Jeremy Loops and Toya DeLazy – amongst others – are performing at this folky fun time. Tickets here.

Whew. Talk about a busy weekend.

Finally; on Sunday, after all this, one last bit of indulgence. How about a little morning walk (if you must) before sitting back and sipping on a mimosa on the balcony at Café Manhattan. Their Sunday Set promises ‘Sultry Sunday tunes and breakfast served all day.’ Sounds perfect to me.

CafeManhattan

Get out there and send us a tweet or something about what gems you’re finding… @MoreThanFoodCT or comment on a Weekender post and give me some more inspiration. Until next week…
