Sharing a passion for Sustainability

We are very pleased to be on the shortlist for two categories in the 2015 Drinks Business Green Awards : Green Company of the Year as well as the Sustainability Award. Not only do we have an integrated sustainability policy and have received numerous certifications for our initiatives and commitments, but we also enjoy sharing our passion for all things sustainable and green with our guests.

Visitors to the estate are invited to learn more about sustainable farming practices while enjoying the beautiful environment of the Franschhoek Valley:

LM hiking trail (95)Enjoy the indigenous fauna and flora on a hiking trail along the foothills of the Wemmershoek mountain. Making out more than 10% of the estate, this voluntary Cape Nature Site focuses on the rehabilitation of natural vegetation on the mountain slopes. La Motte is also enjoys Champion status in the Biodiversity and Wine initiative. Guests have the option of booking for a Monday morning Guided Hike or go on their own, guided by a detailed hiking trail map from Monday to Saturday.

TX9A1363On Tuesday mornings a guided Sustainable Walk walks guests through Motte’s sustainably farmed and biologically grown vineyards, indigenous landscaped gardens and past the Protea gardens where various “fynbos” species are cultivated, ending with a special visit to the vegetable and herb garden that supply the restaurant and farm shop with farm fresh produce.

artichoke barigoulePierneef à La Motte Restaurant sources the majority of the vegetables, herbs and salads from the biological garden on the estate and has a policy of using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients as far as possible.

La Motte Farm Shop KBiologically grown produce such as seasonal vegetables and flowers are available to purchase from the Farm Shop.

Aromes de La Motte ethereal oil productsThe estate has its own range of body products called Arômes de La Motte. This range is made from ethereal oils harvested from biologically grown ethereal oil plants on the estate. The products are available from the Farm Shop.

Foyer (2)Visitors are encouraged to read more about the awards and accreditations displayed on a designated wall in the wine tasting room or obtain detailed information on the farming practices from the La Motte Museum’s information hall.

By entering competitions awarding sustainable practices, La Motte hopes to direct more attention to responsible farming and winemaking practices and integrating a green approach in everyday living.
