Sequillo 2014 — the last flight

2014 is the very last vintage of the Sequillo wines. The Sadies have decided to enable Eben and his team to focus on their Family wines, commenting

‘…we are grateful that we can say goodbye with two wines of great depth and equilibrium. We have learnt much and have truly enjoyed being part of the Sequillo project; and we hope you will be able to taste this in every glass of these Swartland wines.’

2014 is regarded as a difficult vintage in SA, and the Sequillo releases are lighter yet more focused than previous vintages, showing lower acidity and an attractive softness. These are perhaps built for the short to medium term as both hold beautiful purity and poise in their youth. There is an elegance and perfume to the red, coated with chalky tannins, while the white once again has astonishing depth and minerality. In this vintage, the white probably trumps the red.

Stocks are limited and the wines will be released from the estate in tranches, so email [email protected] to place your order.

The 2014 labels: ‘We have never been more content with a wine [Sequillo Red 2014] or closer to what we envisioned in 2003. This does not mean the eagle has landed, since one never really arrives with wine. The journey continues, but the jackal buzzard is looking towards new frontiers and the 2014 red embodies the last flight of Sequillo Cellars.’

Tasting notes

Sequillo Red 2014 – R169
‘The 2014 Sequillo Red, as was the case with the 2012 bottling, did not include Carignan and Grenache. Both of the aforementioned grapes just did not manage to produce a high enough quality fruit and we opted to leave them out of the final cuvée. The 2014 vintage was all about fresh fruit flavours and lower alcohol and all in all just made for a wine that will drink very well from even a young age. The ageing was also slightly altered for this vintage as we bottled earlier in order to preserve much more of the pure grape flavours – and in many ways it was a huge success. We are extremely happy with the 2014 Sequillo Red bottling, and it is a great final flight for this cellar.’

Sequillo White 2014 – R169
‘As for the 2013 we also fermented the entire blend together as a co-fermentation. Then the wine was aged in the same big and already-used foudre throughout the first year. The wine was bottled straight from the lees. The overall impression of the 2014 Sequillo White is seamlessness, since absolutely no aspect of the wine is standing loose, but everything is tightly woven and together. The acidity and mineral, slate aspect on the mouthfeel are even more prominent than it was in the 2013 and it just beams with the qualities of the granite soils of the Paardeberg. 2013 was great but 2014 is equal in measure and a great flight…’
