Alex’s Weekender: Johannesburg

1000 Drawings

It’s officially happened and I can’t think of an opening paragraph so instead I am just going to indulge my love for the 80s and leave this here.

Now that you are hopefully sufficiently excited for the weekend (as if you weren’t already excited on Sunday night when the last one ended). Here is a little taste of what I would be doing if I didn’t work on weekends

Thursday 14 May  2015

Thursday night we have the usual suspect of an exhibition opening. This one is at Circa and is actually a dual exhibition. The first is Tamlin Blake’s “Revelation – Stories and Secrets Disclosed”. a series of tapestries made from recycled newspaper that take influence from the 14th Century tapestry “Apocalypse Tapestry of Angers”, as well as the news articles and stories in the papers themselves.

The second exhibition is “Battlefields” by Francki Burger

This body of work investigates landscape and history and how politics, race and violence are embedded/layered within the landscape. Historically, landscape in South Africa acted as a symbol of intimacy, a layered network of meanings and a place where cultural identity could be inscribed and imagined.

While these two exhibitions may seem a little high brow for most I definitely think the exhibitions are worth going to for anyone that appreciates art and it’s unique manner of tackling with topics so current in our society (weekends can be for learning too).

Friday 15 May  2015

Friday night I recommend a trip up to Pretoria for the FNB Whisky Live Showroom. It will be a showcase of the widest range of whisky/whiskey (yes there is a difference) under one roof. Last year MTF sent me to the one in Soweto and have promptly decided not to send me again. Perhaps out of fear of me writing another pretentious article… or drinking too much whisky/whiskey and bringing our name into disrepute (again). I can the showroom will be loads of fun, and if you are friendly enough to the booth girls they will give you lots of free tastings. I do suggest pre organising a ride home, or a friends couch. Be safe out there folks.

Saturday 16 May 2015

Saturday there is something really special happening that I recommend as many people as possible take advantage of: the Past Experiences tour of Liliesleaf Farm

If there is one heritage site we recommend that everyone in Jozi visits…it is definitely Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia. This exciting and interactive site brings to life an incredibly exciting time in Joburg’s history. Once the underground base of the ANC and the Communist Party, the events that took place here would change South Africa for ever

Jo from Past Experiences will guide the tour of a site she is incredibly passionate about, which will focus on the history of the Liliesleaf, its famous residents and the amazing restoration and conservation project that took place at the site.
